Silver Lake seeking designer’s touch for Sunset Junction plaza

A design competition has been launched to create a small plaza and “permanent installation” – think monument sign or artwork – for Silver Lake’s Sunset Junction.

The $100,000 project proposed for Sunset and Santa Monica boulevards would anchor the western end of  $1.5 million in public improvements that includes new street trees, patterned crosswalks and bike racks along a three-block stretch of Sunset Boulevard. (click here for a block-by-block proposal).

The “Envisioning Silver Lake Design” competition, sponsored by Council District 13 and the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council,  focuses on a wedge-shaped piece of asphalt next to the Silver Lake Jiffy Lube.  The judges want to stretch that $100,000 budget to include a permanent installation, trees, bike racks, and a place to sit that does not become a homeless encampment. Judges will be looking for “relevance to to Silver Lake culture, history, and Sunset Junction.”

Submissions are due April 11. There is no prize money but perhaps Jiffy Lube can throw in a free tune-up.
